Then came September 11, Operation Enduring Freedom, and George Bush’s thinly veiled desire to finish what his father had started in Iraq.Ĭonsequently, Conflict: Desert Storm has become something of an interactive hot potato. Still, wars are soon forgotten, and when Conflict: Desert Storm was conceived (the game, not the TV show), the world’s peacekeeping armies had moved through Somalia, the Balkans and East Timor. Of course, the main reason we haven’t had a Gulf War action game until now is because it was and still remains a contentious war, one that whether it was necessary or not, certainly gave EastEnders a battle in the ratings war. Serious Sam can take out 100,000 screaming headless zombies in the time it takes George Bush Sr to call his boy and say: "You go get ’em, son." Shocking figures indeed, but no more impressive than your typical PC game. However, according to US Central Command, 100,000 Iraqi soldiers were killed, while close to half a million others were either wounded, taken prisoner or were courting execution for desertion. If there is one thing you can guarantee in a war action game it’s a high ratio body count and they don’t come any higher than the six week Desert Storm operation - according to 'official’ figures Iraqi forces managed to kill about 150 of the Coalition forces, with a few more notched up by the US. So it’s a little strange when you consider that the Gulf War has taken so long to reach our monitors. Just so long as the odds are stacked heavily in our favour. Well, OK then, the number of games featuring the Tet Offensive or Rorke’s Drift have been pretty thin on the ground, and despite the potential carnage, Passchendaele hasn’t seen much in the way of in-game footage, but generally, wherever there is war, us PC gamers are willing to fight. Strangely the Conflict series gradually went downhill from here with the later Vietnam and Denied Ops entries being almost completely unplayable but this first entry in the series remains an engaging team based shooter.Pick a war any war, and you can pretty much guarantee that it has been done to death on PC already. Many of todays heavily scripted FPS games fail to provide this option and anyone that enjoyed Call of Duty's Spec Ops missions will certainly find something to enjoy here. One element that hasn't dated however is the option to play the entire game in co-op mode with a friend via split screen. On occasions it is possible to shoot an enemy to find that his friend, standing barely 10 metres away, is still facing the wrong way completely unaware of your presence. The graphics are a far cry from games in the Call of Duty or Battlefield series and the AI of the enemies can be very poor. Being released in 2002 the game has obviously dated in some areas. Should you wish you can even take direct control over any squad member in order to utilise their skill set yourself. Commanding your AI compatriots is fairly straightforward and orders such as 'take cover' or 'fire on an enemy' can be given with the press of one button. Aside from a few issues with moving your characters aim when near walls or other objects the controls are generally precise and easy to learn. The game allows the player to switch between third and first person views at will with the former providing an auto-aim function and the later allowing for more precise crosshair control. Each mission sees the player(s) put in charge of four soldiers that each possesses different skill sets (heavy weapons expert, explosives expert etc) and sent out to carry out given mission objectives such as rescuing hostages or destroying the enemies’ military equipment. Each mission sees the Conflict Desert Storm is a team based military shooter set, as the title suggests, in the Gulf War of the 1990's.
